This is a special event for just ONE DAY ONLY and will take place as follows:

Mid-morning refreshments available (tea, coffee, cake). Entry is free, parking is free.

On the day itself, there will be an introduction to the background of the company, our product range and the workings of our artificial grass installers & stockists network. Following this, attendees will be split into 2 groups. Group 1 will have a guided tour of our artificial grass factory whilst Group 2 will be given a demonstration of how to install our artificial grass. The 2 groups will then swap over.

Balcony Makeover With Artificial Grass

Artificial Grass For Dogs

Artificial grass can transform your life, of that we have no doubt. From removing the need to mow and maintain the lawn to having an all year round green that pleases the eye when you look out on to your garden, the advantages of artificial grass are manifold.

Life changing experiences, however, are not just restricted to people ... pets too deserve a good quality of life. Take dogs for example. As any dog owner knows, having a grassed area close to the house where their dog can enjoy fresh air is a bonus - although it can also bring its problems. Some dogs suffer from grass allergies, with many having runny noses and itchy ears when they are affected, so for these poor canines artificial grass can be a more pleasurable option and add to their quality of life.

The feedback from our artificial grass customers who have dogs has, to date, been very rewarding. Indeed, many of them send us photographs of their dogs enjoying their artificial lawns such as the one below. They certainly look relaxed and happy pooches!

Then there is the issue of going on holiday ... many dog owners cannot take their dogs with them on holiday so they have to put them into boarding kennels. The kennels usually have dog runs - grassed areas where the dogs can run, play and have some exercise - but when bad weather comes, these dog runs can be hard hit, becoming muddy or frozen. Edinburgh Festival Cocktails & Artificial Grass

The market for artificial grass seems to know no bounds at the moment. Many homeowners are still only just beginning to realise the long-term benefits of installing artificial grass in their gardens, on their patios, decking or as a children's play area and commercial businesses are also waking up to the notion that they can add colour and practicality to their premises in one fell swoop by using artificial grass.

Take restaurants and bars for example. The ever-popular Edinburgh Festival takes place this month and it was interesting to see artificial grass mentioned in a Guardian newspaper review. It was not a performance review but a guide to the best cocktail bars in Edinburgh! The journalist picked out The Bramble cocktail bar and described how it stood out from the premises surrounding it by virtue of its artificial grass smoking area.

Using artificial grass carpet for smoking areas outside bars and restaurants is becoming more popular.

This photograph was taken in La Roche-Sur-Yon in SW France outside a bar/restaurant. Clearly they wanted their smoking customers to have a little more colour in their surroundings. Let's face it, staring down at a dirty and often chewing-gum strewn pavement is not the best of appetisers for a nice evening out!

Artificial Grass Adds A New Dimension To Camping & Caravans

From bad weather to lack of time for gardening, there's a growing number of reasons why people are turning more and more to artificial grass. According to a recent report, producers of artificial grass are reporting increases in sales in an industry now worth some £2bn annually worldwide.

The growth in demand for artificial grass does not, however, just come from people wanting less mud in their gardens or not having the time for lawn maintenance. There is an increasing awareness of how artificial grass can compliment other aspects of life - take camping and caravanning for instance.

This photograph (above) was kindly sent in to us by a customer who purchased our Lifestyle City artificial grass to fit out their camper van. As you can see from the picture, it adds a nice touch of colour to the interior but of course is very practical as it can be removed to wash/wipe away any dirt or mud and then be replaced clean and fresh again. Ideal for those visiting country park or attending music festivals!

Another customer sent in the next photograph showing how they used our artificial grass carpet tiles on the balcony and steps leading up to their static caravan. Again it adds a richness of colour whilst being very practical for cleaning.

IRB & FIH Approval For SIS Artificial Pitches

Artificial grass has a wide variety of uses, most if not all of which we have covered to date in our artificial grass blog. A good example is when it's used for artificial pitches for sports such as soccer, rugby, gaelic football, golf and tennis. We covered this at the end of last year in a special post about Support In Sport who offer the complete package of manufacture, design and supply of artificial sports pitches - see "Artificial Pitches - A New Generation Of Grass".

As a member of the SIS Group of companies, we were delighted to learn of the latest, significant accreditations they have been awarded with regard to the manufacture/supply of artificial sports pitches and are happy to share that information with our readers below ...

1. Hockey pitches - SIS is now an official FIH licensed manufacturer and installs FIH approved pitches. Their synthetic hockey grass is manufactured to a specification recognized by The Federation Internationale De Hockey and BS 7044 Part 4.

2. Rugby pitches - SIS is now an IRB Preferred Turf Producer and installs IRB approved pitches. SIS has developed two specific, synthetic rugby turf products which are designed to meet and exceed the IRB requirements. Even The Fish Seem To Like Artificial Grass

We have written before about pets and artificial grass and how it can be beneficial for them - from dogs being able to run around and play in the garden in winter without getting muddy and bringing all the dirt indoors to how exotic pets such as lizards can enjoy a nice vivarium grass interior that’s easy for them to grip onto and for their owners to clean.

However, we have never heard of fish enjoying artificial grass ... until today. Scientists have been conducting tests with artificial grass on the sea bed off New Zealand's coast in an attempt to boost local fish stocks. Sounds weird? Well, if we look at the facts, the logic speaks for itself.

Apparently, fish use seagrass for shelter and protection yet in many areas off New Zealand's coast the seagrass has eroded due to sediment from land development. The result … fish stocks are down in those areas. So the scientists came up with the idea of plastic mats made up of plastic grass fronds 5cm to 30cm in length and all tied to a wire frame. They then placed them in strategic areas where natural seagrass has dwindled.

"We made them with tantalising long blades of artificial grass, the things fish really go for," said one of the scientists.

This summer the scientists will be working to tag some of the fish and track their survival and growth rates. The outcome will be very interesting and potentially a great new area of support for the complimentary role that artificial grass can play in everyday life.

Artificial Park Beats The Winter Blues

Artificial grass has many uses - as play grass, an artificial lawn, artificial putting green or even an artificial pitch - but here is a new application that New Yorkers have been finding really beneficial and enjoyable. It has been labelled the Indoor Pop Up Park.

The Openhouse Gallery opened 8 January for a limited few weeks but fast proved a hit with New Yorkers longing to get out of the wintry weather and for whom Spring and Summer days in the city's parks seem a long way off. The idea of the gallery was to offer a sense of warmth, nature and space and its manager was quoted as saying "If anything, we wanted to make people smile."

This 'indoor pop up park' is effectively a small artificial park. With a size of 4,500 square feet, the temperature inside is a very pleasant 75 degrees and its key furnishings are imitation trees, dried leaves and real rocks plus ... you guessed it ... artificial grass and lots of it.

Apparently, the effect is so authentic that people have been treating it like a real park - some even seeming to forget that they are indoors, sitting and staring at the ceiling for hours as if they are looking at the real sky! What's more, it seems to have appealed to all age groups, just like a real park, some people coming to sit and read books, others to meet with friends, play cards, drink a few beers together or couples just snuggling up on the soft grass for a cosy chat.

There's no doubt that the bleak winter weather in the UK leaves many people with little to smile about when they think of venturing outdoors. So it begs the question ... might an artificial park be something of a future feature in our British cities? We wouldn't be surprised!

Today we follow on from the thread of a previous artificial grass blog post when we discussed the subject of grass allergies. We quoted an example of French footballer Yoan Gouffran who prefers to play on artificial grass because he is allergic to natural grass.

Grass Allergies - From Toddlers To Footballers

We have written previously about how artificial grass can help make life better for grass allergy sufferers. Our post entitled Your Ally - Artificial Grass quoted some fascinating statistics on hay fever sufferers in Britain and went into detail on how animals too can be affected.

Recent news headlines have again touched on the subject of grass allergies - this time with two very different stories.

The first is a heart-warming story involving a 4 year old boy in Britain who has a rare form of cerebral palsy and suffers from texture sensitivity. Touching certain things can make him physically sick and amongst those things is GRASS. Enjoying summer sunshine in the garden with his sister or going out with his family to the park or on a picnic are all 'no go' options for him sadly. However, the family have had an artificial lawn installed and the result is that little Harley can now go into the garden in his motorized wheelchair and play with his sister. Long may he and his family enjoy their artificial grass.

Here is a photograph of what an artificial lawn can look like. Medieval Castle Grass Problems

At the beginning of this year, we wrote a special feature on the dangers of mowing the grass. We focused our attention on the alarming statistics that have come to the fore in recent years ...

Over 60,000 Americans admitted to hospital A&E in a 5 year period because of lawn mower accidents (mainly ride-on mowers)
Over 6,000 British people injured every year (mainly from push-type lawn mowers)

Well the issue has now raised its head quite close to home for us here at Artificial Grass Ltd in Cumbria because one of the most important of all medieval castles, Carlisle Castle, is now under a grass cutting ban.

For those who have never visited Carlisle Castle, it has a grassed moat with a steep incline leading up to the base of the castle walls - a magnificent site as you approach it. According to reports, English Heritage which manages the castle, has opted for the grass cutting ban because they deem the steep grassy slopes simply too dangerous to mow. The result? Anger and frustration from the people of Carlisle because the biggest landmark in their city is likely to soon look unkempt.

So what's the solution? Are they going to remove the grass? Have they considered artificial grass? No-one seems to know right now. Something will have to be done, however, because this wonderful landmark deserves to retain its dignity.

Flying Pets & Artificial Grass

All the world loves pets ... or so it seems. In United States especially, there is a growing number of people who want only the best for their pets - from pet care to pet fashion and more.

According to the latest reports, there is even a new, dedicated, pet airline company. Yes, you read that right ... an airline just for pets! They offer lots of information on why they came into being, how they will take care of your prized pooch or moggie and they even offer tips on how to prepare your pet for travel. So what has this to do with artificial grass? Well, at some US airports they have even created what they call 'pet relief areas' (aka doggie bathrooms) so that dogs can 'lift a leg' in their own special rest area before boarding their flight! Apparently, the idea came about because of the need for designated "bathrooms" for service animals.

Reagan and Dulles airports have no less than 7 of these 'pet relief areas' outside the concourses where they use real grass but Dulles also has 2 areas actually inside their concourses, specially fitted out with artificial grass. These indoor doggie bathrooms feature:

an attractive fenced-in area complete with artificial grass
fake fire hydrant (for that all important doggie allure!)
bags for the owners to clean up afterwards

We already know that artificial grass is pet friendly ... dogs seem to love the softness and will readily use it for their toilet needs; it's also easy to clean afterwards and of course is 'all year round green'.

Grass Colour Is More Important Than You Think!

Colour is without doubt one of the most important aspects of human life. It influences many of the choices we make and, perhaps even more importantly, can have a great impact on how we feel.

Creative artists throughout the ages have had an innate awareness of this. The Russian composer Scriabin saw music in colour and even developed a 'colour' keyboard. The Russian painter Kandinsky believed that colours actually 'touch the soul’; he once wrote "Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings."

Grass Designs - What Would Morris Have Thought?

Britain has produced many brilliant designers over the years and perhaps one of the most celebrated both in his own time and today, is William Morris.

As our regular artificial grass blog readers will know, our grass factory is based in Cumbria, a county which is home to many innovative people, particularly crafts people. This summer, there is a special exhibition at Blackwell House in Cumbria dedicated to the life of William Morris - the man many regard as 'The father of the Arts & Crafts'. The exhibits include designs and samples as well as textiles by Morris plus photographs and books, all of which tell the story of not only his life as a designer but also his personal life, his writings and political beliefs.

If you visit the Morris Exhibition at Blackwell House during its first 4-5 weeks, you will also be treated to an extra, special and unique design - in the grass! It is a serious piece of artwork entitled 'LawnPaper' by environmental artist Steve Messam. Essentially, what Messam has done is to take wallpaper designs by William Morris and use them as the basis for grass designs cut into the lawns around Blackwell House. By using selective shading and trimming techniques, Messam believes his work remains loyal to the idealogy of the Arts & Crafts Movement of which Morris playing such a vital role. NOTE: the designs will grow out naturally as the grass grows so be sure to get your timing right if you want to see them!

Soccer World Cup Fun Preserved By Artificial Grass!

Cutting the grass holds many disadvantages for a vast number of people. In the Artificial Grass Blog we have previously touched on these issues such as:

how mowing the grass can be dangerous
how grass allergies can make life miserable - even for animals
how mowing the grass is difficult for disabled people

There is another disadvantage of mowing the grass which has not been on our list ... until now.

Q: What's that?
A: Being asked to mow the lawn when there's a Soccer World Cup match being played!

For those who have already had their artificial lawn installed (photo left), the Soccer World Cup is a joy to behold. They will have plenty of time and energy to relax in front of the tv and enjoy one of the world's best sporting events, knowing that whilst they do so, the rest of the family can be outside enjoying an idyllic lawn.

No more cries of "what about getting this grass cut?" or "there'll be no World Cup for you until this lawn is decent!"

For those who have still the obligation of grass cutting, well .……enjoy the World Cup IF you can … but promise yourself an artificial lawn before 2014!

Prepare For Summer With Artificial Grass

This time last year we published a post full of meteorological optimism called "Looking Forward To The Promise Of Summer". It followed the Met Office's forecast for a warmer than average summer with Chief Meteorologist Ewen McCallum quoted as saying " We can expect times when temperatures will be above 30 °C, something we hardly saw at all last year." Well, it didn't happen! What's more, the embarrassment caused the Met Office to drop its long-term seasonal forecasts.

So, we ask, what's in store for us this summer? And who can tell us? According to a news article in the Daily Mail, the answer might well lie with a company called Positive Weather Solutions who in 2009 actually gave a correct prediction for the 'wash-out' summer we all endured.

Q: What's their prediction for summer 2010 in Britain?

A: A record-breaking, barbecue summer! Indeed, their senior forecaster Jonathan Powell is quoted as saying "... possibly placing it at least in the top three warmest summers recorded."

So, if Mr. Powell is right in his prediction, we can look forward to spending much of this summer outdoors, warm and dry.

Great news .... or is it?

For many people, a hot, dry summer may not prove as enjoyable as you might at first imagine.

Here's a diverse range of examples:

Hosepipe Bans
The gardener's nightmare. Lack of water can ruin a lawn that has been lovingly tended and cared for, leaving it hard, yellowed and thoroughly unattractive.

High Pollen Count
Sufferers of hay fever and grass allergies can be restricted to spending far more time indoors than outside in the sunshine.

Soccer World Cup
For avid soccer fans, 11 June to 11 July 2010 is a special time - one they've set aside in their minds and looked forward to for four whole years. So they are not going to relish being cajoled into cutting the grass every weekend because everyone else wants to enjoy being outside!

If you fall into one of these categories, now's the time to consider the advantages of artificial grass. It saves on water, helps grass allergy sufferers and you'll never again risk missing a Rooney goal for England because of the lawn mower!

Enjoy Your Easter With An Artificial Lawn

Well, it's that time of year again ... you're just contemplating the nice idea of a quiet Easter holiday and you remember the garden!

You know there'll be plenty of tidying up and replanting to do, especially after the worst winter in Britain for 30 years, but then you console yourself that annual replanting is a part of every garden and there's nothing you can do about the weather. So you accept to just get on with it with the hope that it won't take up all the holiday you have.

Then that sinking feeling sets in ... you just remembered the lawn! You look at the faded, patchy, muddy, weed-ridden, mossy mess and contemplate what it will take to get it in shape.You start paging through seed catalogues, get the mower out of the shed for an overhaul and tune-up; then come the visits to the local garden centre for pesticides to sort out the moss and weeds. The 'Green' Green Grass Of Home - For Chickens

Two of the benefits of artificial grass that we have talked about before are how it can help us care for the environment (saving on water and pesticides) and how it can be good for animals (dog runs and kennels).

Well it seems that one large scale industry will soon be adopting new production methods that include artificial grass when it has to meet new EU regulations aimed at protecting the environment and improving animal welfare. The industry .... chicken farming!

In 2012 the EU will require that industrial chicken farms provide enough space for the chickens to move around freely with access to natural light and fresh air and also that their cages are better equipped with a type of bed for each bird to rest on and with sand, grass or artificial grass in their base. Interesting to note that the worth of artificial grass has been recognised by the EU within these new requirements. Some might think this all sounds a little unrealistic but that’s not the case.

One company has already designed a new henhouse that will not only meet the new EU requirements but possibly surpass them. Agrotop’s new industrial henhouse is, they claim, completely 'green'. The coop is designed to blend in with its surroundings so as not to compromise the natural landscape and its roof houses wind turbines and photovoltaic cells so that it can produce its own wind and solar power for electricity generation. Not only that but there is recycling of wastewater and the chicken waste can be processed to produce biofuels, thus offering the chicken farmer a possible additional source of revenue.
