Beat The Drought With Artificial Grass

The current UK drought is beginning to take its toll. As we reported in our last grass blog post, British wildlife is being hit hard from birds to fish to insects and amphibians and we need to do all we can to save water. The average person in England and Wales uses a massive 150 litres of water per day and when you think about that it's quite staggering. No-one needs 150 litres of water per day!

Look around and you will see an increasing number of lawns turning yellow and patchy due to lack of rain and hosepipe bans. It's a sorry sight. Not only that but the hard, dried surface isn't much fun for children and pets to play on in the sunshine.

The answer? Install an artificial lawn :)

Artificial Grass A Generation On From The '76 Drought

We recently touched on the subject of the drought currently affecting many parts of the UK. Our blog post entitled New Era For Artificial Grass referred to the threat the drought poses to British wildlife, especially those in/around water such as the frog, newt and dragonfly.

According to many news reports including this recent one from the BBC, the drought could last until Christmas. A sobering thought. If so, what would that mean? Well, it could be disastrous on a scale that we have not seen before; the British countryside could be depleted of many of its numbers of birds, small mammals, amphibians and reptiles.

Take the common blackbird and hedgehog for example. A large part of their food intake is worms/insects that they find by digging into soil but hardened earth in a drought situation would make that almost impossible. Add into the equation the fact that all birds would be short of water for drinking and bathing and you begin to realise the potential impact that a prolonged drought would bring.

Organisations such as the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) have already reported concerns as to whether some of the rarer species of bird will be able to survive a prolonged drought such as the small population of black-tailed godwits at Nene Washes in Cambridgeshire.

In this context, we all need to thinks of ways in which to conserve water. Water saved by humans could mean the difference between life and death to much of beloved British wildlife.

If you are interested in saving water in your garden, it is worth considering installing artificial grass. Back in 1976 when the last really serious drought hit Britain, artificial grass was not of a relatively poor quality and certainly not good enough to make attractive artificial lawn. For that reason, the product was not seen as providing a solution to saving water in the garden. Today, however, a generation on, artificial grass carpet is entirely different and thankfully provides us with an extra option for helping to conserve water and beat the dreaded hosepipe bans. Our British wildlife needs all the help it can get!

Walking The Dog - With Artificial Grass!

Artificial grass has many uses and we have covered a multitude of those in our grass blog over the years. Today, however, we have something new and exciting to share with you!

Through our network of artificial grass distributors, we serviced a contract for a special window display at Nice airport. The display was to feature a manekin (lady in typical stylish French dress) walking a dog - a GREEN dog! In order to compliment the context and look of the display, it was decided that a quality artificial grass was needed.

Ordinarily, shops use a relatively inexpensive, thin artificial grass for display use but on this occasion, with the emphasis on luxury and style, the client needed something more visually appealing. A New Era For Artificial Grass?

Artificial grass has many advantages and we have addressed these on a regular basis in the 5 years that we have been writing our artificial grass blog. One of the key issues in this regard is that of helping the environment, especially saving water.

The serious drought currently in evidence here in the UK is of concern to us all. Water is crucial to our lives, especially 'modern day' life. From drinking and cooking, to bathroom, washing machine and dishwasher use to car cleaning and watering the lawn, our use of and reliance upon water as a resource is huge.

According to a BBC drought report water levels in many parts of the UK are dangerously low. The last serious drought in the UK was in 1976 yet in some parts of South-East England, current levels of groundwater are even lower than back then. Recent reports have emerged of fish dying in rivers where water levels are simply too low to sustain them and there is now concern that some British wildlife is being threatened such as the dragonfly, frog and newt. So for the sake of preserving our wonderful wildlife heritage we all need to think of ways in which to save water.

One obvious way of saving water is to not water your lawn. However, a natural grass lawn without water will obviously become dry, hard and yellowed - neither attractive to look at nor comfortable for the children and pets to play on. Installing artificial grass is the answer; not only will you save on water this year - a potentially record-breaking year in drought terms - but in years yet to come.

Moreover - and here's a really nice thought - next time your children or grandchildren wonder in amazement at baby frogs in the local pond you will be able to tell them that they are enjoying an extra bit of water thanks to your installing an artificial lawn!

Artificial Grass Open Day Success

Last month we opened our doors just for one day to landscapers interested in becoming installers and distributors for our range of artificial grass products and are delighted to report that the event was an unequivocal success!
Those who attended enjoyed learning about our company and product range and were given a tour of our grass factory plus a demonstration of how to install artificial grass.

There was just one problem with the event … there weren’t enough places available to accommodate all the requests from would-be attendees!

So without hesitation we decided the very same day to host another Landscapers Open day as soon as possible.

Artificial Grass For Dogs

Artificial grass can transform your life, of that we have no doubt. From removing the need to mow and maintain the lawn to having an all year round green that pleases the eye when you look out on to your garden, the advantages of artificial grass are manifold.

Life changing experiences, however, are not just restricted to people ... pets too deserve a good quality of life. Take dogs for example. As any dog owner knows, having a grassed area close to the house where their dog can enjoy fresh air is a bonus - although it can also bring its problems. Some dogs suffer from grass allergies, with many having runny noses and itchy ears when they are affected, so for these poor canines artificial grass can be a more pleasurable option and add to their quality of life.

The feedback from our artificial grass customers who have dogs has, to date, been very rewarding. Indeed, many of them send us photographs of their dogs enjoying their artificial lawns such as the one below. They certainly look relaxed and happy pooches!

Then there is the issue of going on holiday ... many dog owners cannot take their dogs with them on holiday so they have to put them into boarding kennels. Edinburgh Festival Cocktails & Artificial Grass

The market for artificial grass seems to know no bounds at the moment. Many homeowners are still only just beginning to realise the long-term benefits of installing artificial grass in their gardens, on their patios, decking or as a children's play area and commercial businesses are also waking up to the notion that they can add colour and practicality to their premises in one fell swoop by using artificial grass.

Take restaurants and bars for example. The ever-popular Edinburgh Festival takes place this month and it was interesting to see artificial grass mentioned in a Guardian newspaper review. It was not a performance review but a guide to the best cocktail bars in Edinburgh! The journalist picked out The Bramble cocktail bar and described how it stood out from the premises surrounding it by virtue of its artificial grass smoking area.

Using artificial grass carpet for smoking areas outside bars and restaurants is becoming more popular.

This photograph was taken in La Roche-Sur-Yon in SW France outside a bar/restaurant. Clearly they wanted their smoking customers to have a little more colour in their surroundings. Let's face it, staring down at a dirty and often chewing-gum strewn pavement is not the best of appetisers for a nice evening out!

Artificial Grass Adds A New Dimension To Camping & Caravans

From bad weather to lack of time for gardening, there's a growing number of reasons why people are turning more and more to artificial grass. According to a recent report, producers of artificial grass are reporting increases in sales in an industry now worth some £2bn annually worldwide.

The growth in demand for artificial grass does not, however, just come from people wanting less mud in their gardens or not having the time for lawn maintenance. There is an increasing awareness of how artificial grass can compliment other aspects of life - take camping and caravanning for instance.

This photograph (above) was kindly sent in to us by a customer who purchased our Lifestyle City artificial grass to fit out their camper van. As you can see from the picture, it adds a nice touch of colour to the interior but of course is very practical as it can be removed to wash/wipe away any dirt or mud and then be replaced clean and fresh again. Ideal for those visiting country park or attending music festivals!

Another customer sent in the next photograph showing how they used our artificial grass carpet tiles on the balcony and steps leading up to their static caravan. Again it adds a richness of colour whilst being very practical for cleaning.

IRB & FIH Approval For SIS Artificial Pitches

Artificial grass has a wide variety of uses, most if not all of which we have covered to date in our artificial grass blog. A good example is when it's used for artificial pitches for sports such as soccer, rugby, gaelic football, golf and tennis. We covered this at the end of last year in a special post about Support In Sport who offer the complete package of manufacture, design and supply of artificial sports pitches - see "Artificial Pitches - A New Generation Of Grass".

As a member of the SIS Group of companies, we were delighted to learn of the latest, significant accreditations they have been awarded with regard to the manufacture/supply of artificial sports pitches and are happy to share that information with our readers below ...

1. Hockey pitches - SIS is now an official FIH licensed manufacturer and installs FIH approved pitches. Their synthetic hockey grass is manufactured to a specification recognized by The Federation Internationale De Hockey and BS 7044 Part 4.

2. Rugby pitches - SIS is now an IRB Preferred Turf Producer and installs IRB approved pitches. SIS has developed two specific, synthetic rugby turf products which are designed to meet and exceed the IRB requirements. Even The Fish Seem To Like Artificial Grass

We have written before about pets and artificial grass and how it can be beneficial for them - from dogs being able to run around and play in the garden in winter without getting muddy and bringing all the dirt indoors to how exotic pets such as lizards can enjoy a nice vivarium grass interior that’s easy for them to grip onto and for their owners to clean.

However, we have never heard of fish enjoying artificial grass ... until today. Scientists have been conducting tests with artificial grass on the sea bed off New Zealand's coast in an attempt to boost local fish stocks. Sounds weird? Well, if we look at the facts, the logic speaks for itself.

Apparently, fish use seagrass for shelter and protection yet in many areas off New Zealand's coast the seagrass has eroded due to sediment from land development. The result … fish stocks are down in those areas. So the scientists came up with the idea of plastic mats made up of plastic grass fronds 5cm to 30cm in length and all tied to a wire frame. They then placed them in strategic areas where natural seagrass has dwindled.

"We made them with tantalising long blades of artificial grass, the things fish really go for," said one of the scientists.

This summer the scientists will be working to tag some of the fish and track their survival and growth rates. The outcome will be very interesting and potentially a great new area of support for the complimentary role that artificial grass can play in everyday life.

Artificial Park Beats The Winter Blues

Artificial grass has many uses - as play grass, an artificial lawn, artificial putting green or even an artificial pitch - but here is a new application that New Yorkers have been finding really beneficial and enjoyable. It has been labelled the Indoor Pop Up Park.

The Openhouse Gallery opened 8 January for a limited few weeks but fast proved a hit with New Yorkers longing to get out of the wintry weather and for whom Spring and Summer days in the city's parks seem a long way off. The idea of the gallery was to offer a sense of warmth, nature and space and its manager was quoted as saying "If anything, we wanted to make people smile."

This 'indoor pop up park' is effectively a small artificial park. With a size of 4,500 square feet, the temperature inside is a very pleasant 75 degrees and its key furnishings are imitation trees, dried leaves and real rocks plus ... you guessed it ... artificial grass and lots of it.

Apparently, the effect is so authentic that people have been treating it like a real park - some even seeming to forget that they are indoors, sitting and staring at the ceiling for hours as if they are looking at the real sky! What's more, it seems to have appealed to all age groups, just like a real park, some people coming to sit and read books, others to meet with friends, play cards, drink a few beers together or couples just snuggling up on the soft grass for a cosy chat.

There's no doubt that the bleak winter weather in the UK leaves many people with little to smile about when they think of venturing outdoors. So it begs the question ... might an artificial park be something of a future feature in our British cities? We wouldn't be surprised!

Artificial Pitches - A New Generation Of Grass

Today we follow on from the thread of a previous artificial grass blog post when we discussed the subject of grass allergies. We quoted an example of French footballer Yoan Gouffran who prefers to play on artificial grass because he is allergic to natural grass.

Playing football on artificial grass is becoming increasingly popular but not everyone is as much a fan as Yoan Gouffran. There are many people who still hold an image in their minds of the poor quality 'plastic grass' of the 60's and 70's.

Grass Allergies - From Toddlers To Footballers

We have written previously about how artificial grass can help make life better for grass allergy sufferers. Our post entitled Your Ally - Artificial Grass quoted some fascinating statistics on hay fever sufferers in Britain and went into detail on how animals too can be affected.

Recent news headlines have again touched on the subject of grass allergies - this time with two very different stories.

The first is a heart-warming story involving a 4 year old boy in Britain who has a rare form of cerebral palsy and suffers from texture sensitivity. Touching certain things can make him physically sick and amongst those things is GRASS. Enjoying summer sunshine in the garden with his sister or going out with his family to the park or on a picnic are all 'no go' options for him sadly. However, the family have had an artificial lawn installed and the result is that little Harley can now go into the garden in his motorized wheelchair and play with his sister. Long may he and his family enjoy their artificial grass.

The second story is quite a different one - that of a professional French footballer, Yoan Gouffran, who has finally found out what bothers him when he plays football - he's allergic to grass! Fortunately, it doesn't appear to be a serious allergy and is something he can live with but when his team plays on an artificial football pitch he's likely to be one player who is still smiling at the end of the game - win or lose!

Medieval Castle Grass Problems

At the beginning of this year, we wrote a special feature on the dangers of mowing the grass. We focused our attention on the alarming statistics that have come to the fore in recent years ...

Over 60,000 Americans admitted to hospital A&E in a 5 year period because of lawn mower accidents (mainly ride-on mowers)
Over 6,000 British people injured every year (mainly from push-type lawn mowers)

Well the issue has now raised its head quite close to home for us here at Artificial Grass Ltd in Cumbria because one of the most important of all medieval castles, Carlisle Castle, is now under a grass cutting ban.

For those who have never visited Carlisle Castle, it has a grassed moat with a steep incline leading up to the base of the castle walls - a magnificent site as you approach it. According to reports, English Heritage which manages the castle, has opted for the grass cutting ban because they deem the steep grassy slopes simply too dangerous to mow. The result? Anger and frustration from the people of Carlisle because the biggest landmark in their city is likely to soon look unkempt.

So what's the solution? Are they going to remove the grass? Have they considered artificial grass? No-one seems to know right now. Something will have to be done, however, because this wonderful landmark deserves to retain its dignity.
